Buddha from Helgö, made of patinated brass.
A beautiful replica of the find from Helgö.
The Buddha is sitting on a throne shaped as a double lotus; on his forehead, a third eye. The statue was discovered in Scandinavia, however it was most likely made in the late 400s to early 500s in the Swat Valley on the border between modern-day Afghanistan and Pakistan.
It was probably brought to the northern parts of Europe via trade along the Silk Roads.
The historical Silk Roads were a series of overlapping trade routes, networks and communities spanning parts of Asia, Africa and Europe. Active for nearly two millennia between the second century BC and the 15th century AD, the roads created trade opportunities from as far east as China and Japan, to as far west as Scandinavia and Britain. The name ‘Silk Roads’ is taken from the highly sought after Chinese textile.
